Everybody's Oma
Directed by Jason van Genderen - Australia - 93 min.
When his Dutch-Australian mother, ‘Oma,’ develops dementia and comes to live with their family, filmmaker Jason van Genderen begins to make playful video diaries of her life. The family immerse Oma in a world of familiarity and routine at a time when she could just as easily forget her children’s names. The videos unexpectedly become a viral sensation, even appearing on Good Morning America, and seen by over 100 million people worldwide.
Capitalising on the candid immediacy of our screen culture in which smartphones have become instant video cameras, Everybody’s Oma is a story of togetherness, strength and unwavering love. The film shows the humanity to be found in our darkest days – and offers those in similar situations a guiding hand.
